Since 1988, HRS has provided housing, food, training, and mentoring to marginalized people who want to change their lives for the better. By showing them Christ, we transform the entire person through grace and practical help.
The History of House of Refuge Sunnyslope
Elmer and Mim Miller, with the prompting of the Holy Spirit and support of the Sunnyslope Mennonite Church, began ministering to the homeless of Phoenix. The Millers and several other families provided shelter, showers, and food in the gymnasium of their church.
House of Refuge Sunnyslope was established as a 501 (3)(c) and continued the tradition of assisting the homeless. This outreach became House of Refuge Sunnyslope which provided long-term housing to working men.
A safe housing program for working single moms and their children was added.
A third program providing safe housing for women was added.
House of Refuge Sunnyslope has a capacity of 70-80 individuals and can provide housing or private apartments for 35 men, 10 women, and 12 families.
