New Volunteer Opportunities – No Matter How Busy You Are!

volunteer handymanHave you ever wondered how many volunteers a nonprofit organization should have before it hires a volunteer coordinator?

Volunteers are the lifeblood of a nonprofit organization and House of Refuge Sunnyslope (HRS) is no different.

In any given month, HRS can have 275 volunteers on campus, serving over 1200 hours. They mentor, help in the kitchen, answer phones, spend time with our kids, pick up donated food, cook, and much more!

HRS has new volunteer opportunities for “On-Call” Teams:

An On-Call Team is for people who aren’t able to commit to a weekly volunteer spot but would like to jump in occasionally to meet a critical need.

  • Cleaning volunteersSpic ‘N’ Span Team: Clean a vacant room or apartment to prepare for a new resident
  • Handyman Team: Fix and repair our 12 properties
  • Drive & Encourage Team: Help a new resident get ID and other needed services
  • Mama’s Helpers: Assist a single mom with a few hours of babysitting when she has a gap in her day-to-day care
  • Mailing Crew: Help stamp, address and/or stuff envelopes

Meet Arleste, our New Volunteer Coordinator

Arleste Pietrofeso, Volunteer Coordinator at House of Refuge SunnyslopeIn January of 2018, staff member Arleste Pietrofeso moved from our bookkeeper into a new position, Resident and Volunteer Support.  She works closely with our Men’s Program Manager and Women’s Program Manager to provide the behind the scenes tasks critical to the success of 60 – 70 residents.  In addition, she is our volunteer coordinator.  It’s been a big change for her.

Her education and career have been in accounting and she was HRS’s bookkeeper for 6 years. She considers herself an introvert, yet she’s a people-person with a wonderful heart for God and others.

“It’s definitely bringing me out of my shell!”

Her organizational skills come to play as she manages volunteers from 20 different churches and organizations around the Phoenix area. Arleste works one on one with anyone interested in volunteering.  She is also part of our team that coordinates service projects and she follows-up individually after a service day to see if they want to get more involved.

“Volunteers are the heart of HRS; they reflect the love of Jesus to our residents, they encourage the staff beyond measure, and the hours they serve save us the equivalent of almost 7 full time employees. They are simply amazing!”

Arleste’s favorite Bible Verse?

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Arleste says,

“This verse reminds me that God is bigger than my fears, and with Him, I don’t have to worry.”
