Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings are especially busy at House of Refuge Sunnyslope (HRS). Every Tuesday, House of Hope moms and House of Promise women gather with Christian teachers for life-skills classes. The classes can range from Celebrate Recovery to how to manage household finances and plan for the future. On Thursdays, it’s Bible Study time. Christian teachers lead the studies and the residents also get to meet with their mentors. For further support to our single moms, House of Hope families have Family Support Teams. As part of the program, female residents are required to attend these classes. Here’s where the childcare volunteers come in.
At any given time, House of Hope can have from 12-18 kids ranging in ages from newborn to 12 years old. Usually, 10 to 12 of them are under the age of 8. We need 7 childcare volunteers each Tuesday and Thursday night to watch these young ones while their moms are in class. The hours are from 5:15 – 7:15 pm (from drop-off to pick-up).
The classes are held at Sunnyslope Mennonite Church and right now they use 2 of their Sunday School rooms. We would like to expand to a 3rd room, but we need more volunteers. We have a service opportunity coming up. Keep reading….
Meet Connie, our New Childcare Program Specialist
Connie started out volunteering for HRS driving one of our Kitchen vans to pick up food from supermarkets for our food pantry. She is now on staff and supports our families as a specialist and advocate for the kids. She also oversees the volunteers in the Childcare Program and is on site on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings.
Connie’s a retired school teacher. She taught grades 3rd, 4th and 6th for 18 years — all in the same school — Desert View Elementary in Peoria. She specialized in language and social studies. A native Arizonian, she started there as a student teacher.
Her hobbies are reading, hiking, yoga and crafts. She recently remodeled her home and made a coffee table out of a door.
Her favorite Bible verse?
I can do all this through him who gives me strength. ~ Philippians 4:13
